At Praxis, we believe in the power of deliberate practice. Our training is built on technical excellence, mindful training, and a supportive community where everyone — from complete beginners to experienced grapplers — can grow.
Praxis is “the process by which a theory, lesson, or skill is enacted, embodied, or put into practice.” We don't just teach techniques; we teach the theories and concepts behind them, so you understand why and how they work. Every class combines clear instruction with focused, live training to help you recognize opportunities, make better decisions, and execute techniques against a resisting partner.
We're a no-gi gym in the heart of Honolulu. No uniforms, no egos — just a room full of people helping each other get better.
Instructors
Scott Miyamoto — Co-Founder & Head Instructor

Scott began training more than 25 years ago and co-founded Praxis with Dan Nagata in December 2025 to build on what they learned from their instructors while developing a distinct approach to no-gi grappling.
Praxis Grappling Club is centered on shared learning, modern training methods, and the constant refinement of ideas through thinking, training and testing.
Dan Nagata — Co-Founder & Assistant Instructor
Dan is a co-founder of Praxis Grappling Club and a brown belt under Larry Hope. He has been grappling for over 20 years, starting with a foundation in judo and wrestling, and has trained Brazilian jiu jitsu for more than 12 years.
An active competitor, Dan has won five times at Fight 2 Win and once at Submission Battleground, and holds a combined 7-1 record in superfights. He brings that competitive experience to the mat, teaching the same fundamentals and details that have worked for him against high-level opponents.
Whether you're stepping onto the mats for the first time or preparing for your next tournament, Dan and Scott are committed to helping every student build technique, confidence, and a love for the art.
